Being Human - American Style

SyFy’s Being Human — American Style

All names have been changed to protect the innocent.

syfy being human

OK, I’ll admit it; I am not bias-free when it comes to the American version of Being Human. I’ve been watching the original series on BBC America and I’m very fond of George (Russell Tovey), Annie (Lenora Crichlow) and Mitchell (Aidan Turner). Not to mention the suitably creepy cherubic faced and oh-so sinister Herrick (Jason Watkins), who is a police captain, head of the local vampire nest and Mitchell’s mentor in blood.

Ian Somerhalder Interview
Damon Salvatore from The Vampire Diaries
by Abbie Bernstein

Some day, actor Ian Somerhalder may grow weary of questions about Damon Salvatore, the young-looking but actually 162-year-old vampire he plays with such gusto on the CW’s THE VAMPIRE DIARIES. That day seems very far off, however, as Somerhalder takes time to individually greet every reporter who approaches him at the Television Critics Association press event for the series, then thanks each journalist for his or her interest in his work as queries are lobbed at him.

VAMPIRE DIARIES, developed for television by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec from the series of books by L.J. Smith, centers around the romantic triangle of Mystic Falls, VA high school student Elena Gilbert, played by Nina Dobrev, and the Salvatore brothers, Paul Wesley’s Stefan and Somerhalder’s Damon, who are returning to their home turf after a long time away. Stefan is the good, conscientious brother who doesn’t believe in killing humans and Damon, who does whatever he feels like to whomever he wants. But does Damon really enjoy his outrageous, homicidal actions, or is he just doing it to get a rise out of Stefan? “He’s having a blast,” Somerhalder affirms.

VAMPIRE DIARIES is actually Somerhalder’s second gig on a TV series that rapidly developed a cult following. Somerhalder was also in the original cast of ABC’s LOST as the unfortunate Boone, who died early on but has appeared in flashbacks and, this year, returns for the final season in an alternate timeline. “Throughout the season, I think there are going to be a couple of episodes,” the actor says. He is of course sworn to silence on exactly what he’ll be doing on LOST, but one thing he knows for sure - alternating between that show’s Hawaiian locations and the Covington, Georgia set of VAMPIRE DIARIES has been, as Somerhalder puts it, “A tight squeeze. I left the set, flew to the other set, worked, got back on a plane, flew back to the other set, landed and went back to work.”

LaFayette Reynolds
The Louisiana Lagniappe That Seasons HBO’s True Blood
by JKW © Buzzy Multimedia

A lagniappe is a little something extra, a gift with purchase, that unexpected bonus that sweetens a transaction. If LaFayette Reynolds doesn’t fit that description on HBO’s True Blood then I don’t know what would. If you have read the Southern Vampire series by Charlaine Harris and are watching Alan Ball’s HBO’s “reimagining” of the series known as True Blood, you know there are several major differences between them. For me LaFayette Reynolds is one of the best of them.

Whether you are a fan of “The Southern Vampire” series by author Charlaine Harris, or a newly turned devotee that came into the fold with the start of the True Blood television series one thing should be clear to you, true blood, hbo, vampire, sookie stackhouse Sookie Stackhouse can now choose from a smorgasbord of attractive males. I’ll admit that I’ve read all the books in the series and I have my favorite but for the sake of fairness, at least in this post there will be an objective assessment of all five males.

The Truth about Vampires

Not a lot of people can say that their parents brag about what their children do for a living, but I don’t have that problem. My dad introduces me as his daughter the famous author and my mom proudly tells folks, when asked, that her daughter is the vampirologist they saw on Discovery Channel.

HBO True Blood
Charlaine Harris - Southern Vampire Series Review

© Buzzy Multimedia
by June K. Williams

Music may not be the most important element in a film or television program but it should prepare you for what is going to be taking place onscreen. “Bad Things”, the theme music on True Blood, HBO’s “reimagining” of the wondrous world of Charlaine Harris’s Southern Vampire Series, does an outstanding job of setting both mood and place. The musician responsible is Jace Everett and I’m beginning to think he is the best thing to come out of Texas in a long while.
