Dear Martin,
A boggart is a creature of folklore in the British Isles. It is malevolent – some believe that a badly-treated brownie (the fairy kind, not the chocolate kind) may become a boggart. The household boggart sours milk, likes to put its clammy hand on the face of sleeping people and generally makes mischief. The outdoor field and pond-dwelling boggart is more destructive, stealing children and even drowning and eating unwary travelers.
