At the end of Season Three of THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, Elena Gilbert, played by Nina Dobrev, becomes a vampire. Does Elena become a vampire in the series of novels that the TV show is based on, and if so, when?

Dear Hayley,
Yes, Elena gets vamped in the books by L.J. Smith. At the end of the second volume, THE STRUGGLE, Elena flees for safety onto a bridge, but the bridge breaks, sending her into the water below. Elena drowns and wakes as a vampire. (The TV series and the novels diverge considerably from one another.)
