Dear Sara,

What is a Pegasus?

– Terry S.

Dear Terry,

Pegasus Winged Horse

Popular culture has co-opted “Pegasus” to mean any winged horse, Pegasus is actually the name of a specific winged horse in Greek mythology. The offspring of Poseidon – who in addition to being god of the sea was also the god of horses – and the Gorgon Medusa (no, I don’t know how a seagod and a snake-haired woman birthed a flying horse, they just did), Pegasus flew to Mount Olympus to serve the god Zeus. The horse is credited with bringing Zeus thunder and lightning. When Pegasus was captured by the human hero Bellerophon, the two became a team, allowing Bellerophon
to slay the monstrous chimera. Pegasus is also a celestial constellation.
