Dear Sara,

Is there really such a thing as a vampire squid, or is this some kind of fantasy creature?

Kindly yours, Jack C.

Dear Jack,

There is certainly a real-world creature called a vampire squid. This deep sea dweller, scientific name Vampyroteuthis infernalis, appears to turns itself inside-out as it swims, via fins that flap back and forth across its body. It is found throughout the world’s oceans at depths ranging from 300 feet to 3,000 feet. Like other squid, it can also move by expelling water behind it to make it move in the opposite direction. It is only about six inches long and is bioluminescent, meaning it can glow in the dark, when it opts to do so, via a substance within its body. The vampire squid has a sharp white beak and, proportionate to its body, the biggest eyeballs of any known animal species.
