Dear Sara,
Is it true that sandwiches are actually named after a person called Sandwich, or was it the other way around?
Hasta la vista, Charles C.
Dear Charles,
While sandwich-like food items, mainly meat wrapped in bread, have appeared throughout history, the sandwich as we know it now is named after the eighteenth-century Englishman John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich. Montagu didn’t invent the sandwich, but he asked his valet to put meat between two pieces of bread so that he could hold it in one hand and keep his other hand free for card-playing. His friends took note of how convenient this seemed and asked for their meals “the same as Sandwich,” which is how the term became popularized.
