Dear Sara,

What is the superstition concerning horseshoes nailed up over barn doors?

Best wishes, Anna T.

Dear Anna,

Because horseshoes are made of iron and iron is believed to repel supernatural beings such as faeries, one superstition is that a horseshoe nailed to a barn door will keep out the spirits. Some cultures believe that a horseshoe nailed points up will bring good luck to the owner of the barn, but points up will cause the luck to run out, while other cultures believe the points should be nailed down so that the luck pours out onto the owner. Most superstitions agree that the horseshoe must be already used and found, as opposed to newly purchased.
