Dear Sara,

What is a basilisk?

Sincerely,
Stephanie A.

Dear Stephanie,

In European folklore, a basilisk is either the “king of serpents,” able to cause death with just a look (hence the expression “basilisk stare”), or a small but incredibly venomous snake that leaves a trail of poison behind it and has a likewise deadly glare. In real life, basilisks are a genus of medium-sized lizards: common basilisk, Western or red-headed basilisk, green or plumed basilisk and brown or striped basilisk. Their native range is between Mexico and Central America, though some are found as far south as Ecuador.
