Getting old isn’t for sissies. Once you turn 30, your back starts to ache, arthritis is your middle name, and ED stands for something other than eating disorder. Then there’s that whole dying thing. Sucks doesn’t it? But what if getting old wasn’t inevitable? What if “turning back the clock” was as simple as a handshake and a couple of triplicate forms?

Moon Flights
Authors: Elizabeth Moon
Publisher: Night Shade Books
ISBN-13: 9781597801096
ISBN: 1597801097
Rating: 8/10

Elizabeth Moon is perhaps the most prolific science fiction author in the last twenty years. In a span of time from the Gulf War to the present, the former United States Marine and equestrian enthusiast has published almost twenty novels, and several other short stories. Her Legacy of Gird series is one of the most popular. With a range encompassing the horrific to the fanciful, the sensual to the bizarre, Moon’s writing has remained diverse even as she continues to explore the limits of sci-fi. Moon Flights is no different.

The Secret History of Science Fiction by James Patrick Kelly and John Kessel

The Secret History of Science Fiction
Authors: James Patrick Kelly & John Kessel
Publisher: Tachyon
ISBN-13: 9781892391933
ISBN: 1892391937
Rating: 6/10

There are anthologies, and ‘anthologies’. The Secret History of Science Fiction is the latter. As such books go there is hardly anything to recommend against it, at least at first. A crop of crème de la crème authors both mainstream and not. Expert commentary from the editors and a book cover that is equal parts mysterious and alluring. Yet to ape a phrase from Top Chef, it’s all in the presentation. To put it kindly, The Secret History is long on presentation, but too much of a good thing can kill a dish-and it certainly is the case with this tome.

Unseen Academicals by Terry Pratchett

Unseen Academicals
Author: Terry Pratchett
Publisher: Harper
ISBN-10: 0061161721
ISBN-13: 978-0061161728

Ever since Terry Pratchett first burst on the scene in the early 1970s, he’s rarely disappointed. The Discworld series is still considered one of the best in the fantasy genre and his satirical novels Good Omens is still highly regarded. Disappointment, simply, is not in his nature. Unseen Academicals is no different.

Moon Called
Mercedes Thompson: Not Your Typical Supernatural Heroine

Author: Patricia Briggs
Publisher: Penguin Group (USA) Incorporated
ISBN: 9780441013814

So what’s the deal with the Mercy Thompson novels? What’s so special about yet another *groan* heroine living among the creatures of the night? Initially, when you look at the cover of these novels, they’re often what many have come to expect from urban fantasy and paranormal romances. Depending on which cover you happen upon it may be a naïve-looking waif of a girl, her hips thrust forward slightly and with some kind of paw print tattoo on her stomach (Moon Called.) In another you might see a heavily tattooed, no-nonsense badass, her figure bathed in the light of the moon. The woman on this cover is holding a wrench in her hands and gives the impression of controlled stillness. She almost appears to be silently daring something to attack her, waiting in anticipation to clobber anything that gets too close (Bone Crossed.) So which is it? The naïve, wide-eyed waif, those eyes of hers finally opened to the supernatural world around her or the badass chick waving around automotive repair tools? Read More→

Russell T. Davies, creator of TORCHWOOD and QUEER AS FOLK, producer of DOCTOR WHO for the Christopher Eccleston/David Tennant years of its current revival,

Doctor Who, RUSSELL T. DAVIES, Tocrchwood

He and David Tennant have already done the big Q&A panel for their mutual final season of DOCTOR WHO, which will go on with a new Doctor and a different showrunner. The others, who’ve been talking to him for awhile, detach themselves to talk to other BBCA talent at the party, leaving me to converse with Davies solo.
