Moon Called
Mercedes Thompson: Not Your Typical Supernatural Heroine

Author: Patricia Briggs
Publisher: Penguin Group (USA) Incorporated
ISBN: 9780441013814

So what’s the deal with the Mercy Thompson novels? What’s so special about yet another *groan* heroine living among the creatures of the night? Initially, when you look at the cover of these novels, they’re often what many have come to expect from urban fantasy and paranormal romances. Depending on which cover you happen upon it may be a naïve-looking waif of a girl, her hips thrust forward slightly and with some kind of paw print tattoo on her stomach (Moon Called.) In another you might see a heavily tattooed, no-nonsense badass, her figure bathed in the light of the moon. The woman on this cover is holding a wrench in her hands and gives the impression of controlled stillness. She almost appears to be silently daring something to attack her, waiting in anticipation to clobber anything that gets too close (Bone Crossed.) So which is it? The naïve, wide-eyed waif, those eyes of hers finally opened to the supernatural world around her or the badass chick waving around automotive repair tools? Read More→

Werewolves Are Cuddly…Not!
(The Role of Weres In The Mercy Thompson Series by Patricia Briggs)

The hoopla over the Mercy Thompson trilogy has got me thinking. No, I’m not planning to harm myself so that I can be turned into a werewolf and become an Alpha male (although judging by the cover art of the books, Mercedes is quite a catch). With all the attention in the trilogy on the role of pack relations and Mercy’s own relationships with Adam and Samuel, I had to know, how much of the sexual and emotional chemistry in the books was good ol’ deductive reasoning and how much of it was literary sizzle? Armed with this burning question, I did some sleuthing of my own. Armed with a day’s worth of gumshoe research at the local public library, and aided by my trusty sidekick Google, I came up with some titillating answers…only it’s not exactly the type of thing the mechanic herself would want to hear.

Blood Bound
A Mercy Thompson Novel

One of the perils of a science fiction series-or any other media-is the so-called “sophomore slump”. The period when the audience is still in love with the world the character has created, yet it is obvious that sequel, or sequels, aren’t as good as the original. Novels plod along at a slower pace, and situations that used to be interesting no longer have the same charm that they used to have. Such is not the case with Patricia Brigg’s follow up to Moon Called. This paranormal action-fantasy still delivers a drop-kick of adrenaline to the senses, and that’s all that matters.

Iron Kissed
A Mercy Thompson Novel
Book 3 - Review

Mass Market Paperback: 304 pages

Trilogies or any series in general, are fickle creatures. Ask anyone, and they all have different opinions of them. ‘I liked the original, but I hated the second book’ one person might say. ‘I hated the original, but I loved so and so in the final novel’. And inevitably, everyone seems to hate the sequels. While the Mercy Thompson series has matured over the past three years, with “Iron Kissed”, author Patricia Briggs proves that the paranormal action-fantasy still has heart-not to mention guts. And though the third book in the series finds Mercy coming to terms with new challenges in her life, she still finds herself sleuthing around in Washington State, only this time the mystery is much more personal than she’d like to admit.

Moon Called
A Mercy Thompson Novel
Book 1 - Review
by Patricia Briggs

Since the “Twilight” series became popular, a spate of novels and books based around vampires, werewolves, and the supernatural have wormed their way into bookstores across the country-not to mention the hearts of teens, tweens and anyone interested in walking on the wild side. Some are sappy romances, others testosterone-laden action fests. Few are worth reading beyond the first page. Few that is, except Patricia Briggs “Moon Called”.
