Movie Review

Cloud Atlas, Tom Hanks

“Our lives are not our own, we are bound to others, past and present. And by each crime and every kindness, we birth our future.” (Cloud Atlas - Film)

“Power, time, gravity, love. The forces that really kick ass are all invisible.” (Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell )

Cloud Atlas is not one but six stories whose storylines are tendrils interlaced and woven together to create a history of sorts. We move from from the Pacific of 1849 through post apocolyptic Earth where valley people are living a primitive life with the threat of extinction ever present. The ending, like the very beginning is somewhere else entirely.

Movie Review

Frankenweenie, Tim Burton

“It’s alive! It’s moving! It’s alive!” Who doesn’t remember that iconic line from the original Frankenstein (1931)? Now Tim Burton has given us a dark comedic take on the tale, done in stop-motion animation, in glorious black and white. It has all the hallmarks of awesome: a stellar cast, a Danny Elfman soundtrack, and Tim Burton’s hallmark quirky characters.

You already know the story: Victor Frankenstein, science nerd, amateur film-maker, beloved dog-owner tragically loses his beloved dog Sparky, and brings him back in a homage to the classic Mary Shelley tale.

It’s cute, it’s intense, it’s dark, and it’s funny. The overall look of the film is classic Tim Burton, with a dash of goth (helped along by the black and white color scheme–everything is a little dark). All of the characters are very stylized.

Looper, Movie Review

I adore well-done time travel stories. When I was twelve or thirteen, my dad gave me a book of classic time travel stories by Murray Leinster–I was hooked for life.

The Master - Movie Review

The Master

Director: Paul Thomas Anderson
Writers: Paul Thomas Anderson
Stars: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams
Drama

Movie Review

the master, Joaquin Phoenix

I was really looking forward to The Master–and since it opened in limited release, there was a bit of extra anticipation involved. Why was I so interested? Word was out that the movie was loosely based on L. Ron Hubbard and the origins of Scientology, and I’ve read a lot about Hubbard–Robert Heinlein (science fiction writer) and John Campbell (Hubbard’s editor) talked about him and his theories a lot in their correspondence, and Campbell was a big supporter of Dianetics, the “science of mental health” that was the precursor to Scientology.

The Master is the story of two men: Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman), author of The Cause, a charismatic, intellectual, energetic man; and Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix), an ex-navy, drifter who is mentally unstable, perverted, and an alcoholic.

End Of Watch - Movie Review

End of Watch

Director: David Ayer
Writers: David Ayer
Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Peña, Anna Kendrick, Natalie Martinez, David Harbour, Frank Grillo, America Ferrera
Action-Drama

Movie Review

police procedural

As the credits rolled, a friend watching the film said “That didn’t seem like fiction.” I agree. Let me tell you why.

End of Watch has a fairy-tale beginning: Once upon a time in South Central, but it is a far cry from a fairy tale. It’s a buddy-cop film centering on uniformed officers Brian Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Miguel Zavala (Michael Peña), partners working the streets in the tough part of town. They are in high-stress jobs, working on the edge, often forced to use their weapons on the job.

The setup as the movie begins is a city in turmoil: Hispanic gangs are taking over the city from the Black gangs that were ascendant, and the inevitable conflicts are leading to arrests on both sides. Taylor and Zavala are back at work after time-off following a “good” shoot. Zavala is happily married to his high school sweetheart, expecting his first child. Taylor is going to school part-time, with an eye toward law school one day. He is highly intelligent, and looking for the right girl. A project for a film class has him recording the pair’s work on the beat, providing the opportunity to add in some documentary-style (found footage) clips to increase the sense of realism.

Movie Review

house at end of street horror movie

They’ve been a number of horror films out in the last couple of weeks, and House at the End of the Street is the best of the bunch. It’s got at least some originality to the plot, and it’s genuinely scary.

This movie starts with some really creepy music, running behind the standard “things that happened in the past” montage. Note: there are some truly disturbing images here–this one is not for the faint of heart.

Dredd 3D - Movie Review

Dredd 3D

Director: Pete Travis
Writers: Alex Garland, Carlos Ezquerra (characters), John Wagner (characters)
Stars: Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, Lena Headey
Science Fiction

Movie Review

science fiction movie

From the beginning voiceover by Karl Urban, it’s clear this is not the 1995 adaption of Judge Dredd–it’s a darker, grittier, Christopher Nolanesque treatment of the material that never lets up. For fans of the original comic book (2000 AD), the look and feel of this dystopian future is just what they were looking for.

Resident Evil: Retribution - Movie Review

Resident Evil: Retribution

Director: Paul W.S. Anderson
Writers: Paul W.S. Anderson
Stars: Milla Jovovich, Sienna Guillory, Michelle Rodriguez, Bingbing Li, Boris Kodjoe, Aryana Engineer, Oded Fehr, Johann Urb, Shawn Roberts
Science Fiction

Movie Review

Resident Evil, Retribution

This one is all about Alice (Milla Jovovich)–hey, it’s a Resident Evil film. And about girls kicking ass–lots of it. If you missed any of the first four movies, don’t worry, Alice narrates a quick recap early on that will do a decent job of bringing you up to speed.

Everyone is in this one: even some characters that died in previous films are back, some of them multiple times, and several new characters from the Resident Evil video games.

As usual with the Resident Evil films, there is plenty of Girl Power front and center. Milla Jovovich fights, well, everyone and does it in her usual inimitable style. Representing Umbrella Corporation is the still-brainwashed Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory), and the two together have some awesome action sequences. Also getting in their share of sparring are Ada Wong (Bingbing Li) and returnee Rain (Michelle Rodriguez). And all of them do some (or all) of their fighting in high heels (ouch!). There’s even a spot where Alice and Ada do a “Charlie’s Angels”-type pose before they run off to fight monsters.
