Why Gamers Make Great Friends
by Theresa Bane

gamer friendship

I am a gamer and have been rolling dice consistently since 1980. Active in the gaming community, married to a game designer, and using a very clever pen name, I also write role-playing game source material (No, I am not telling you what my pen-name is, that’s the whole point of having a pen-name). Nearly all of my friends, about 87%, are gamers as well.

And by “friends” I mean those folks I see and interact with socially on a routine basis, spend the holidays with, would allow to house-sit/pet-sit for me, would lend money to, know their birthdays, the names of their spouse and children, and their phone number (as opposed to speed dial 4). My “real friends,” bless their hearts, have moved bodies for me and seen me in my pajamas with unbrushed hair and teeth.

I can’t speak to what friendship is like for the rest of the world, or for “people who live in reality” if you prefer, but I can tell you why I feel my friends are the best sort of friend a person can have.

1. Gamers Don’t Judge. To begin, normally my OCDs would insist this entry be listed as number two, where it would fall according to the rules laid out in The Chicago Style Manual, but all the voices in my head had a meeting and in a rare unanimous decision agreed this is a key and essential point, likely the foundation of gamer friendships. For whatever reason, the gaming community tends to attract the widest array of personalities, life-stylers, orientations, and the like. However, because of our profound love of gaming, we completely overlook everything a person brings to the table except for dice and chips. Religion and politics have no place at a gaming table unless your Knight is going to be facing down a Cleric of Toth.

The Qualities of a Good Game Master

As those of you who follow my Buzzy Blogs know I am die-hard gamer and have been into the whole RPG thing (Role Playing Games) pretty much since its inception and introduction to the masses back in 1979. The rest of you who are reading this know it now. I have played a lot of RPGs in my day, logged many hours at a table throwing dice and creating characters. At the risk of sounding even older than your grandparents if I’ve learned one thing in all my years I’ve learned this: it doesn’t really truly matter what system you play, what dice you use or what genre you’re in so long as one thing is present-a good game master.

Zen and the Art of Character Creation
How To Create Characters for Role-Playing Games & Writing
©Buzzy Multimedia

If you want to make a character into something special, memorable, and enjoyable rpg, role-playing, gaming, gamer, GM, game master not only for you but for others just remember this one simple rule: Verb it. By that I mean, “do something,” like breathe life into your creation. Imagine how it will walk and talk and interact with the world. Don’t just make a character that is a stereotypical archetype, slap a name on it and call it a day. Explore your options. Think about what you need and want out of a character. Whether you’re an author looking to make a character that will capture your reader’s interest or a gamer wanting to bring something to the table that is more than a name and a set of numbers, it’s all the same.

All children, except gamers, grow up.

In the beginning there was gaming and it was good. We had character sheets, an array of dice, the occasional painted figurine to represent our guy, and a table around which we sat, looking at one another, laughing, killing, and saving the world every Friday night, like clockwork. Truly these were the best of times. Each of us remembers when we started gaming, and who “turned us onto it,” because like any good addiction, you don’t just wake up one morning and decide today is the day that I will start a new hobby/lifestyle.

WHAT’S IT LIKE TO BE A GIRL GAMER?

Someone asked me “what’s it like to be a girl gamer?” Odd question, but I suppose fair enough. At the risk of sounding like some old coot, we chicks had it a lot harder back in my day. Gaming was virtually unheard of, and the only store in the mall that carried gaming stuff was located on the bottom level of the mall in a mazelike area. “Kathy’s Gaming Shop,” which later changed its name to “The Dungeon Masters’” was the only place you could meet, game, and shop all in one place. Kathy became a surrogate mother to about 100 kids and knew us all by name. She more or less babysat us Friday evenings and from mall’s opening to close all day Saturday. She was a sweet lady, and now nicely retired on the countless dimes and dollars we kids willingly gave her hand over fist back in the day. But, I’m getting ahead of myself. Let me start at the beginning.

DATING IN THE GAMER SUBCULTURE

Written by Theresa Bane (Love Guru To Gamers)

Before anyone raises an eyebrow, I am both a die hard gamer and a nerd. Allow me to present my Credentials:

- In 1980 I was 11 and my mom was my first DM
- I was a member of the Dungeons and Dragon Club in High School
- I still have my very first set of dice
- There are two sets of mechanical pencils in the house: one is strictly for gaming with, the other is strictly for doing math at my desk
- There is one entire room in my home where the walls are lined with bookshelves filled with gaming books and other relevant reference tomes. This room also holds a long, thick, wooden table which seats 8. It was the dining room table that my husband gamed at when he was a kid.
