Game of Thrones House Sigil Shot Glasses
[Set of 12] - Product Review

Game of Thrones House Sigil Shot Glasses [Set of 12]

I’m a huge fan of anachronism. Without my glasses, I would have landed beneath at least one troll bridge at Scarborough Faire. And I would not have had the photographic evidence to show I’d been there.

However, when I first saw the
Game of Thrones Shot Glasses
shot glasses, anachronism was the first word on my lips. When I think of GoT drinking, I think of beautifully engraved goblets filled with spiced and mulled wines and flagons of dark honeyed ales. What would GoT characters do with such a pittance of booze?

Then, a fiendishly brilliant idea occurred: Drinking Game.

I confess, I am a Drinking Game Virgin. If I’m drinking, I tend to pour what I want and just enjoy.

So, I consulted a team of trusty drinking game vets and fellow GoT fans.

The episodes really do lend themselves to drinking games. Pick any trigger you want:

* Nudity/sex
* Profanity
* Violence
* Point of View Changes
* Drinking
* Insults
* Conspiracy
* Foreign language (Particularly annoying to a friend with a hearing impairment who has to turn on captioning for those scenes)
* Your favorite character
* Your favorite house
* Appearance of a character from the house which bears the sigil on your shot glass

Just for grins, the Spouse (Tony) and I gave it a try. Our weapon of choice, Demon Root Beer in 12 ounce glass bottles: Henry Weinhardt for him, IBC Diet for me, because I needed to remain sober enough to write this review afterward.

Tony chose profanity and I chose violence. We rolled dice and ended up with Season 1, Episode 5. This is the episode where King Robert and Eddard Stark are at loggerheads over killing Daenerys, so there was plentiful for both of us to drink over.

Tony’s bottle was empty before the end of the show. Mine right at the credits when Eddard was wounded in the leg. I’m certain if we were drinking hard liquor, neither of us would have made it halfway through.

Warning: Choose your drinks carefully. Tony and I would have been under the table before the end of our chosen episode had we gone with hard liquor. Even alcohol substitutes have their drawbacks. Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister on GoT) is no fan of the grape juice they use as a substitute for wine because of its laxative effect.

This is a nice set for friends who enjoy collecting souvenir barware. It comes packaged in an attractive lined case with five one-ounce GoT sigil glasses, including House Greyjoy, House Stark, House Targaryen, House Lannister, and House Baratheon. Glasses are sturdy enough to clink without cracking and attractive enough to please any GoT fan. I’m particularly fond of the Targaryen and Stark glasses.

The case is finished in a rustic-stained basswood with the Game of Thrones title emblazoned on the lid. It is lined with dark gray foam (HBO’s product description says black) to protect the glasses. Unfortunately, the box itself is a light basswood which is easily stained and sadly, easily broken.

HBO also has individual wine glasses, steins and shot glasses available if you don’t want a full set.

Special thanks to the following (in alphabetical order) who kindly helped me with ideas for the Drinking Game:
Matt Borgard
Carol Joynt
Tony Kyle (for using his limited supply of his favorite root beer for the experiment and taking photos)
Jim Reader
Tracy Simmons Bitonti
Kimbro West

Game of Thrones Littlefinger Mockingbird Pin

I’ve been a Game of Thrones fan since the initial book so you can imagine my delight when the stories came to television. I’m particularly enthralled with the Direwolf bookends which were created by Darkhorse in honor of this series.

Game of Thrones Direwolf Bookends

No surprise I collect books. And I have too many, but I am fairly organized. Bookends help, but on my shelves, they’re not just something to keep the books from falling over on the rocks or the collectible action figures—the bookends represent memories of places I’ve been.

I have a pair of hatching eggs from Creatures and Crooks in Richmond, VA, a set of black cats from Book People in Austin, and some Golden Gate Bridge bookends as a reminder of our trip to San Francisco.

No, I haven’t been to Winterfell, but Game of Thrones is one series that’s traveled with me everywhere I’ve lived. When Song of ice and Fire first came out, Nina Smith, the proprietress of Book Rack, my favorite independent bookstore in Oklahoma City, recommended the book to me. I was solidly hooked. The scene where the Starks found the direwolf pups was one I read more than once.

Why was Brienne so loyal to Renly Baratheon?

Dear Sara,

Q. I love watching Game of Thrones and am curious about Brienne. Why was Brienne so loyal to Renly Baratheon to the point that her grief is inconsolable when he dies?

Thanks,
Wanda M.

Dear Wanda,

A. They met when she was just 14 years old.Renly was kind to her, danced with her, and showed her every courtesy due a young lady of her station while those of her father’s court as well as men from other territories treated her like a freak. She had been taunted for her size, for her lack of grace and for unladylike behaviour. While those qualities were off-putting to most men ,Renly was gay and his attitude toward her was not colored by sexuality. Brienne by nature is stubborn, loyal and probaly because so many have tried to dupe her she is also distrustful. Renly and Brienne had an honest and straightfoward understanding that was something she relied on so when he died she was devastated.

Why did Daenerys Targaryeon walk into the fire at her husband Drogo’s funeral?

Dear Sara,

Spoiler Alert
*Game of Thrones Season 1 ending*

Why did Daenerys Targaryeon walk into the fire at her husband Drogo’s funeral?

Thanks,
ARP

Dear ARP,

The simplest answer may be the best. It seems she was acting on instinct. First she ordered the death of the woman who betrayed her, Mirri Maz Duur. There is no reason to suppose that Daenrys had been told that it would take an exceptionally fierce fire to hatch the dragon eggs. When she walked into the flames it appeared as if she was committing a sort of suri type of suicide in response to the death of her husband and loss of her unborn child. She was angry and desperate. First she ordered the death of the woman who betrayed her, Mirri Maz Duur. Then she placed the eggs in the fire. All all her hopes and dreams destroyed. So near the conflagration herself, she gave in to her passion and fell in. She had no reason to suppose she would live and not be consumed by the flames. Her survival once the flames died down along with the three hatchlings elevated her to a new status that neither her birthright nor her marraige had ever done.This is how she became know as the Mother of Dragons. In essence she reclaimed her place as the Targareons were known as dragon lords centuries before Daenrys was born.

Was Game Of Thrones Modeled After The Real War Of Roses?

By Sara Bellum · Comments (0)

Dear Sara,

Rumor has it the George R.R. Martin modeled Game of Thrones after the real War of the Roses, is that true?

Thanks,
Game Of Thrones Fan

Dear Game Of Thrones Fan,

Yes, in part. Like all good writers George R.R. Martin did a good amount of research before begining his novels but as his is a work of fiction he was able to cherry pick through history and only use the parts he found to be of particular interest. Even then he did not just record history but made these his own. Much as D.B. Weiss is doing on the television version of the books. A shared vision perhaps but it is where it diverges that makes it more fun.

The “First Men” approximately correspond to the Celts. Th Andals and their seven kingdoms are pretty close in nature to the Saxons and their kingdoms in England. The Targaryens are very like the Normans (without the dragons of course). House Lancaster sort of matches up to House Lannister while House York does the same to to House Stark. The Dothraki being nomadic tribesmen who swoop out of anywhere to devastate and loot would probably be the Huns but in later centuries could be the Vandals. These things need not match up precisely.

Game Of Thrones Question

Dear Sara,

What is the real deal with Lord Varysr in Game of Thrones? Is he really only loyal to the realm as he claims or is he trying to bring back Targaryen rule? What would be the benefit to him either way?

Ed Kovacks

Dear Ed,

Varysr, Master of Whisperers, is said to be a eunuch with no family, no lands, nothing to leave behind. He does wield some power behind the throne and he understands the importance of discretion. He first rose to his position under Targaryen rule but he also suffered under them. My guess is he wants to see a ruler on the Iron Throne who is strong enough to keep the nation from dissolving into anarchy and capable of repelling invaders. I also believe he has a need to avenge himself if he was forcibly castrated. The pain and humiliation of castration coupled with a permanent inabilty to have children has been known to create a need for payback. Petyr Baelish had a conversation with Varysr where he offered him young boys in his brothel. Wether that was to torment Varys or if it implies that not all of his equpment was removed is a moot question.
