Supergirl and The Flash - A Crossover Episode? How??
Is there an episode featuring both Supergirl and The Flash?
The two are on different networks, how could it be possible?
Dear Sara –
I have heard there was a crossover episode with SUPERGIRL and THE FLASH, but I’ve also heard that the two shows don’t exist in the same universe. I know they don’t exist on the same network – SUPERGIRL is on CBS and THE FLASH is on The CW. Can you explain what’s going on?
Yours in bewilderment,
James A.
Dear James –
There was indeed a crossover episode on SUPERGIRL with a visit from THE FLASH’s The Flash (played by Grant Gustin) – which explained that, in fact, Supergirl (played by Melissa Benoist) and The Flash really don’t exist in the same universe. THE FLASH introduced Earth 2, which exists in a separate reality from The Flash’s world. In the SUPERGIRL episode, The Flash ran so fast that he accidentally went through the space-time continuum and ended up in a third Earth, which is where Supergirl lives. This explains why nobody on THE FLASH or ARROW ever talks about Superman or Batman.
As to how a multi-network crossover happened, CBS and The CW both have the same parent company (the “C” in CW stands for “CBS,” while the “W” is for “Warner Brothers”), and DC Entertainment owns both properties. So contractually, it seems like this wouldn’t have been too big a leap. Far more interesting is the fact that NBC, after it canceled its CONSTANTINE series, allowed CONSTANTINE star Matt Ryan to guest on The CW’S ARROW the following season, as although DC is the originator of both properties as comic books, there is no corporate tie between NBC and The CW. It was recently announced that SUPERGIRL – produced by DC Entertainment and the same creative team that works on ARROW, THE FLASH and LEGENDS OF TOMORROW – will be moving to the CW in the coming season, so look for many more crossovers in the foreseeable future.
Sincerely,
Sara Bellum
