Wicked Game
Author: Jeri Smith-Ready
Publisher: Pocket Books Fantasy
ISBN-13: 9781439101346
Rating: 8/10

Vampire novels are legion these days. There’s Elizabeth Bear’s Victorian nineteenth century books, vampire, vampire fiction, the undead, dracula the Anita Blake series (soon to be an animated series from HBO), and of course the “Twilight” series. With such a glut of vampire-themed novels, it’s easy to let them fade into the background, so to speak. This is not the case with “Wicked Game”. Jeri-Smith Ready’s sixth novel since “Requiem For The Devil”, is a musically themed romp featuring so many twists it will be hard for any mortal to put down. With a cast of three dimensional characters-and subplots galore-why try to resist being bitten by Smith-Ready’s sensual prose and almost lyrical narrative? Read More→

Hell Girl 5

Publisher Random House Publishing Group
ISBN: 978-0345506696
Rating: 7/10

Manga is nothing new for us Americans. For over a decade, boys and girls, myself included, have been exposed to a whole slew of them, from classics such as “Ranma ½”, “Urusei Yatsura”, and the ever popular “Gundam” series. But it wasn’t until the Independent Film Channel started screening episodes of the “Hell Girl” series (along with Witchblade reruns), that I became aware that there was a manga also. Judging from the solid writing and character development, it’s a pretty good comic, though it falters at times.

The Dimension Next Door
Author: Martin H. Greenberg and Kerrie Hughes, Eds.
Title: The Dimension Next Door
Publisher Daw Fantasy
ISBN: 9780756405090
Rating: 7/10

Anthologies are a tricky lot. Either the stories are all good or they all suck, and everybody has their favorites. “The Dimension Next Door” is no different. Within its pages, there are sleepers, and then there are stories that tingle the spine and encourage the reader to plow through the book even further. Fortunately, there are more of the latter than the former.

New Amsterdam
Author: Elizabeth Bear
Publisher: Far Territories
ISBN-10: 1596061634
ISBN-13: 978-1596061637
Rating: 8/10

An unforgiving eye and a damned disinheriting countenance.

That describes Elizabeth Bear’s “New Amsterdam” to a T. From its opening pages, the vampire-detective-sorceress novel of scandal and intrigue pulls no punches, and delivers plenty of them in return. The result is a neo-Victorian (or Edwardian rather) alt-history novel that is as gritty as any set in the present.

sci-fi, science fiction, sci-fi book reviews, hard sci-fi
The late Thomas Disch may not be a household name. Yet for over 40 years, he transformed the landscape of science fiction, writing edgy, avant-garde fiction that ranged from horror (“The Sub: A Study in Witchcraft”, for which he received a Hugo Award) to controversial novels tackling difficult subjects such as genocide, religion, and the afterlife. Nearly a year to the day that the 68 year old took his own life, a new anthology of selected stories has been released-and what it reveals is a fertile mind as complex as it was troubled. Read More→

Abbott and Costello. Crosby and Hope. Tango and Cash. Buddy-adventure stories have been a staple for ages. Now we can add to those Zelikman and Amran. Who? “The Gentlemen of the Road”-that’s who-and in Michael Chabon’s follow up to the gritty, dark “The Yiddish Policemen’s Union”, the critically acclaimed author proves he still has what it takes to turn out a good read-hilariously so, in fact.
