Dear Sara,

Why does Samwise Gamgee call Frodo Baggins Mr.Frodo but neither Pippin or Merry are so formal?

Leonard H.

Dear Loenard,

I’m afraid the land of the Shire though a pleasant place was also created by JR Tolkein to be socially like the old English social system with “masters” and “servants”. Sam was part of the serving class while Frodo’s uncle was a personage of considerable wealth, family, lands and influence. Pippin and Merry may not have been wealthy but their families were considered to be a cut above the peasantry. What sets the lot of them apart is that those differences didn’t affect the way the interacted with each other, well not too much.
