Why are so many horror movies set in the Arctic and Antarctic?
Warmly yours,
Kelly T.
Dear Kelly,
There are several reasons. The most obvious is that a common component of horror is isolation, and the polar regions are among the most isolated on Earth. It’s not easy to leave, it’s not easy for the outside world to know what’s going on, it gets dark and stays dark for months on end and the cold can kill you if the monster doesn’t. From a production standpoint, parts of Canada – in reality, accessible to production hubs like Vancouver and Toronto – stand in credibly for these remote areas, which in turn makes setting tales in these locales easier for filmmakers.
