Dear Sara,
Is there really such a creature as a cookie cutter shark?Skeptically yours,
Pete K.
Dear Pete,
There is indeed. The cookie cutter shark, also known as the cigar shark, is relatively small in size, growing to a maximum length of approximately twenty-two inches. However, unlike most sharks that take distinctively-shaped bites out of prey (we all know what a shark bite looks like, right?), the cookie cutter shark pulls circular pieces out by applying suction-cup-like lips and then making the excision with its lower teeth. Cookie cutter sharks sometimes travel in schools and have been known to attack humans, but are not considered especially dangerous to larger creatures (including humans). They also seem a little unclear on what they’re trying to eat at times, since cookie cutter shark bite marks have been found on submarines and undersea cables.
