Dear Sara,

A friend of mine said Total Recall was going to have a different ending where the lead character wakes up and the WHOLE story was not real but created by Rekall. Is that true or just a rumor?

Ted Bennett

Dear Ted,

Total Recall was loosely based on a short story by Philip K.Dick called “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” In the short story Douglas Quail has Rekal implant memories of an adventure on Mars and while they are working on him they uncover other memories which seem to show that he really had been on Mars and was involved in top secret action. There are layers of real memories suppressed, false memory implanted then uncovered only to find the false were based on the real and so much going on in one human mind unhinges him. In the end what is “real” and what is “false” is impossible to determine for certain because it is determined by the altered memories of a damaged man.

F.Y.I.
The name of the main character in the Philip K. Dick story is Douglas Quail who went to total Rekal.

The Hollywood adaptations changed the main characters name to Quaid who went Total Recall (1990) & Total Rekall (2012).
