ISBN-13: 978-0061721748
Rating: 6/10

As we’ve noted earlier, anthologies are a (The Dimension Next Door) tricky thing. Especially in a market, er, genre that’s gotten the teeth knocked out of it over the last few years. Yet despite all obstacles economic and otherwise, the editors of Year’s Best Sci-Fi 14 have done a tremendous job sifting the wheat from the chaff, all while maintaining the same humble attitude that’s made the books accessible and fun.

The Secret History of Science Fiction
Authors: James Patrick Kelly & John Kessel
Publisher: Tachyon
ISBN-13: 9781892391933
ISBN: 1892391937
Rating: 6/10

There are anthologies, and ‘anthologies’. The Secret History of Science Fiction is the latter. As such books go there is hardly anything to recommend against it, at least at first. A crop of crème de la crème authors both mainstream and not. Expert commentary from the editors and a book cover that is equal parts mysterious and alluring. Yet to ape a phrase from Top Chef, it’s all in the presentation. To put it kindly, The Secret History is long on presentation, but too much of a good thing can kill a dish-and it certainly is the case with this tome.

Unseen Academicals
Author: Terry Pratchett
Publisher: Harper
ISBN-10: 0061161721
ISBN-13: 978-0061161728

Ever since Terry Pratchett first burst on the scene in the early 1970s, he’s rarely disappointed. The Discworld series is still considered one of the best in the fantasy genre and his satirical novels Good Omens is still highly regarded. Disappointment, simply, is not in his nature. Unseen Academicals is no different.

Doctor Who, RUSSELL T. DAVIES, Tocrchwood

is at a Television Critics Association press tour party for BBC America at the Langham Hotel in Pasadena. He and David Tennant have already done the big Q&A panel for their mutual final season of DOCTOR WHO, which will go on with a new Doctor and a different showrunner. Davies asks his assistant to bring him a glass of orange juice while he talks to several journalists, including yours truly. The others, who’ve been talking to him for awhile, detach themselves to talk to other BBCA talent at the party, leaving me to converse with Davies solo.

Title: The Dimension Next Door
Publisher Daw Fantasy
ISBN: 9780756405090
Rating: 7/10

Anthologies are a tricky lot. Either the stories are all good or they all suck, and everybody has their favorites. “The Dimension Next Door” is no different. Within its pages, there are sleepers, and then there are stories that tingle the spine and encourage the reader to plow through the book even further. Fortunately, there are more of the latter than the former.
