SciFi Actors and Oscar Nominations - Are there any?

The Best SciFi Actors

SciFi Actors who have been nominated for an Oscar

The Oscars
Science Fiction Actors

Dear Sara,

Is it really true that no actors have ever been nominated for Oscars for performances in genre films? I keep reading articles that say this.

Sincerely yours,
Albert T.

Dear Albert,

This is, to put it politely, baloney. SciFi actors have certainly been nominated. In 1969, Ruth Gordon won the Supporting Actress Oscar for playing a witch in the horror movie ROSEMARY’S BABY. Since then, other notable Oscar nominees have included Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the original 1977 STAR WARS, Sigourney Weaver as Leading Actress for her work in 1986’s ALIENS and Ian McKellen as Gandalf in THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING.

It’s not frequent, but it happens.

The name's Sara Bellum, and I'm the editor-at-large here at BuzzyMag - the hostess with the mostess, if you will. I like to think that my first calling is fighting crime and delivering a heaping dose of sweet, sweet justice to all manner of thugs, miscreants, hoodlums, ruffians, and ne'er-do-wells, but unfortunately, violent vigilantism doesn't exactly pay big bucks these days.

Times are tough, my friends, and I've got bills to pay, so I decided to put my encyclopedic knowledge of all things sci-fi & fantasy-related to use to help me land a day job. To tell you the truth, it's kind of a nice change of pace. My manicures have been lasting a bit longer lately.
