Lost Girl on SyFy
LOST GIRL
by June K. Williams
Lost Girl is an exciting addtion to the SyFy channel line-up and offers a fresh take on supernatural storytelling. In the world of urban fantasy, vampires, werewolves, witches, demons and the occasional zombie are frequent players. What are far less often seen onscreen are the fae, otherwise known as fairies, let alone demonic succubae or incubi. The lead character in Lost Girl is Bo, played by the smoking hot Anna Silk. Bo is unaware of her origins having been either given away or kidnapped as an infant and raised by humans. This has not worked out too well for her as she has been given no training and her instinct to suck the life force out of anyone she gets close has made her think of herself as a serial killer.
Never able to stay long in one place Bo comes across a community of supernatural folk who are divided into light and dark. They have reached a sort of equilibrium and are demanding she declares for one or the other but Bo does not want to choose sides and that presents a danger. Her refusal could encourage renegades to buck the established order and all-out war could ensue. Add to this mix her recently acquired over eager human sidekick Kenzi who is street-smart scammer and a thief. He speaks Russian fluently and knows how to work around the system..at least the human system. Bo also has met and been helped by a member of the light fae named Dyson. He is a police lieutenant and a shifter and most importantly to Bo, she can be intimate with him without killing him. Quite a plus in a boyfriend even if she is unsure of his true motives in befriending her. Dyson is played by Kris Holden-Reid who is easy on the eyes and has a smoldering sensuality about him onscreen. In addition to Dyson, Bo has found a helper and a love interest in a human doctor who works for the light fae. Lauren is indentured to the head of the light fae who goes by the name of Ash, so I’m not sure that the light fae are all goody two shoes. Slavery is not cool. You won’t find Albus Dumbledore lurking about the light fae although some may actually twinkle.
Considering that Bo by her very nature uses sexuality to drain the life force from others you can be sure this show has a big helping of materiel you might not want young kids exposed to. It is fun for adults, combining some familiar elements like a supernatural bar tended by Trick, a powerful blood seer who is wise as Yoda without the grammatical dyslexia with an unhealthy helping of supernatural politics as well as many other mysteries. The monster of the week and the case of the week keeps the flow going but the thing that has me coming back is the backstories and development of the players .
The show is filmed in Toronto but unlike Forever Knight, an earlier supernatural detective series, no direct mention is made about the city. Pity, Toronto is a terrific spot. In fact we owe a lot to our friends from the north when it comes to Sci-Fi and Fantasy. So if you are tired of pseudo reality TV shows and want to watch a scripted show that packs a punch, you could do a lot worse than tuning into Lost Girl on Mondays, 10 PM Eastern, 9 PM Central time of the SyFy channel.
