Dear Sara –

What exactly causes a rainbow?

– Have a good day!
Julie T.

Dear Julie –

A rainbow is caused by the reflection of light in waterdroplets in the Earth’s
atmosphere. In a primary rainbow, the color spectrumgoes from red on the outer arc
to violet on the inner arc. In a double rainbow, where a second rainbow is caused by
light reflecting twice within the water droplets, the colors are reversed (violet on
the outside, red on the inside).
