What are Troglodytes? Cavemen? Are they real?

Bone Tomahawk features “Cavemen” style characters called Troglodytes

What is a Troglodyte? Are they real?

Dear Sara,

I just watched the movie BONE TOMAHAWK, which stars my favorite actor Kurt Russell as an Old West sheriff who tracks down a group of human-like creature called Troglodytes, that is, non-evolved humans who live in caves. Is there/are there ever really such creatures as a troglodyte?

Yours truly,

Beth N.

Troglodytes appearance in Bone Tomahawk

Dear Beth,

Yes and no. Pan troglodytes is a term for the common chimpanzee, it refers to the genus for the small bird the wren and it’s a generic term for a “caveman.” However, there is no offshoot of humanity that is scientifically classified as a troglodyte.
