Way of the Wolf
Book One - The Vampire Earth Series
by E.E. Knight
Way of the Wolf introduces the reader to a post apocalyptic world where the bad guys have won. The year is 2065. Humanity has been reduced to cattle and the ranchers are Lovecraftian (as in H.P. Lovecraft) style alien monsters that use the life force of sentient beings to extend their own lives indefinitely. These puppet masters known as the Kur were responsible for the collapse of civilization by precipitating a nuclear war and releasing a type of mad zombie pestilence that swept around the globe destroying the remnants of civilization.
Stepping into the vacuum, the Kur appeared as saviors to mankind and carved the Earth up into personal fiefdoms.
We see this world through the eyes of David Valentine who lives in one of the areas that the Kur have not yet bothered to conquer mostly because it was not worth the effort. For the most part the free humans make themselves scarce when the weather is good enough for the Kur to bother sending their minions in to assault and cull what they may. David had been orphaned in a raid and was taken in by an old priest who educated him and shared with him the life that existed before the Kur.
David sets off to join the forces that want to secure their patch of free lands and aid as many people as they can to fight back from within the lands held by the Kurian Lords. Helping equip these freedom fighters are aliens known as Life Weavers. They come from the same race as the conquering Kur but have rejected the taking of life force from sentient beings. We see David Valentine begin to grow and learn as he sets out on this path. He has had to sacrifice much just to get this far and the reader may well wonder what he will become as he continues to fight the good fight.
