5 Fathers From Science Fiction & Fantasy That Are Worthy Of Being Celebrated
5 Fathers From Science Fiction & Fantasy That Are Worthy Of Being Celebrated.
by June K. Williams
A couple of years have gone by since I posted an article about dads in SF & F. I missed a few that are awesome dads, worthy of recognition. You don’t have to be perfect to be role models and these guys prove that.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan as John Winchester in Supernatural
Marine, mechanic, demon hunter. How does that work when you are raising two sons who will have to take up the torch of Hunters? How do you prepare them for loss? Not exactly healthy father and sons relationships but then again how many dads need to train up their sons to stand up to the supernatural scum of the earth? In the end John Winchester doesn’t just sacrifice his life for his boys; he was willing to relegate his very soul to torment in hell in exchange for Azazel sparing his son Dean’s life.

John Noble as Walter Bishop in Fringe![]()
Walter Bishop was a brilliant scientist, a genius who went mad after working on government projects that were ethically and morally beyond the pale. It landed him in a lunatic asylum for 17 years and though now reunited with his son, he is what most people would call very eccentric. He is very complicated and his relationship with his son is hard to fully fathom. Walter risked everything to save an alternate universe version of his son from dying from the same disease that killed his son in THIS universe. A father whose love goes beyond words.

Colin Ferguson as Jack Carter in Eureka![]()
Jack Carter is not just a dad. As a single father whose job as Sheriff in the town of Eureka he is frequently called upon to save the world from one sort of apocalypse or another. He was supposed to be an average Joe kind of guy surrounded by some of the most intelligent and highly educated people in the world yet it was often his uncommon sense that saved the day. This job also made it especially hard to keep his daughter grounded yet let her grow. On the whole he made it work.

Eric Pierpoint as George Francisco in SyFy’s Alien Nation![]()
George Francisco is a detective, a police officer. He is also an immigrant from another world. His people were used as slaves by a ruthless overlord species. Now his people are known as Newcomers and not only does he have to fit in to human Earth society, he must steer his children in a way that will allow them to assimilate without losing their own heritage. Sounds familiar? However it may sound like the problems of immigrants everywhere, other immigrants don’t have males who get pregnant. As a Newcomer father he is faced with unique challenges but throughout the series it is clear that both Humans and Newcomer fathers share similar roles in protecting and guiding their children.

Sean Beanas Eddard (Ned) Stark in Game of Thrones![]()
Game of Thrones is chock full of miserable fathers but Ned Stark isn’t one of them. Heis happiest when he is at home and he not only is a good father to his children that he fathered by his wife, but also to his son John Snow. John was presumed to be his bastard by another woman but though he does not carry his surname he has been cared for by Ned. Ned even treated Theon Greyjoy as a son though he was a hostage and a ward as a result of his father Balon Greyjoy’s being on the losing end of the Greyjoy Rebellion. As good a father as he was, nothing could save him from being ensnared in the deadly politics in Kings Landing. If only he could have stayed in the North with his family they might all have had happier outcomes.
